Gemma Bowker is a Fashion Design graduate, graduating with a First Class Honours in Fashion Design BA at the University of South Wales. Gemma designs a mixture of womenswear, menswear and unisex clothing.
On her placement year, Gemma worked 8 months at Roksanda Ilincic, with 6 months working in product development and 2 months with the pattern cutting team. During this time she worked three fashion week shows and the AW16 Pre fashion shoot. In the Product Development team, Gemma's jobs included cutting and sewing toiles, carrying out fabric testing and trialing, cutting final fabrics for sample, running errands and sourcing trimmings. She also worked with factories, creating pick and packs from spec sheets and delivering packs and samples. She also had the opportunity to sit in fit meetings, pinning, altering and photographing the garments as the designers discussed them. Through this, she got the opportunity to work under the head pattern cutter, aiding with alterations to the patterns and having the opportunity to develop her own. Gemma then went on to work as a patten cutter at Timur Kim, working on AW16 and showing at LCM in May 2016. During this she learnt to grade sizes, take a pattern from a garment, and alter garments to fit a person. Timur also runs a production business for other designers so Gemma was able to learn skills in Childrenswear and wedding dresses, working on batch produced garments and personal alterations.
